Triggers for Psoriasis
If you suffer with psoriasis you already know it’s no fun. The dry, flaky skin, the embarrassing rashes and red patches; it’s all a lot to cope with. Anyone who suffers from psoriasis knows the constant struggle of discovering what will trigger a flare-up and then avoiding those situations. So what triggers those flare-ups?
One of major triggers is stress for many illnesses and stress can cause a psoriasis outbreak as well. Any large amount of stress on the body attacks the immune system and weakens the body’s natural defense against disease. With the weakened immune system, whatever was holding the flare-ups at bay is busy elsewhere and an outbreak pops up. The stress can be any type of stress from emotional stress to anxiety to external stress sources.
Skin injuries can also cause serious flare-ups at the site of the injury as psoriasis sufferers are more prone to infection. Any small scratch or abrasions on the skin can cause infection or psoriasis to develop. Injuries happen and can’t always be avoided but if you are injured, immediately take care of the wound, cover it and add Neosporin if it’s a small cut. Taking care of all injuries right after they happen can help prevent outbreaks. Sunburn is also a major risk for flare-ups, partly due to the damage it can do to skin. If you acquire a sunburn, rub it with aloe so it will heal more quickly. Leaving a sunburn untreated can result in a painful flare-up.
Illness can trigger flare-ups as well. The most common illness for flare-ups is strep throat, especially if it remains for awhile. This can cause flare-ups and red bumps all over the skin. Frequently, this type of psoriasis, guttate psoriasis, is mistaken as a rash or allergic reaction. In most cases, antibiotics will help.
Some medications are responsible for flare-ups. If you have been diagnosed with psoriasis make sure to talk about the possible reactions and side effects associated with any medications you are prescribed. Your doctor may be able to prescribe a different medication with lowered risks, or give a second medication to prevent an outbreak.
Learning what can trigger an outbreak will help prevent any flare-ups.
